Information for Clinical Instructors (CI's)
BEFORE THE ROTATION
What will UC send me prior to the student’s rotation?
We will send you the student’s name and contact information as well as a clinical education packet that will include several items including a syllabus, rotation expectations, PTP I Clinical Competencies, PT CPI Web information, etc.
What if I want more information about the current DPT Curriculum?
To review the current DPT curriculum, please click here (PDF). You may also contact the DCE at email@example.com or call (513) 558-7481 for further clarification.
What should I expect the student to do prior to the rotation?
The student should send an introduction letter as well as place a call to the CCCE.
What should I speak to the student about prior to the rotation?
Parking, arrival time, lunch, hours, dress, etc. If you could send the student examples of any forms as well as frequently seen diagnoses that would be very helpful.
DURING THE ROTATION
What paperwork should the student bring to clinic?
The student should bring documentation of learning style, emergency contact information and goals for the rotation.
Do I have to do an orientation on the first day?
Orientation sets the tone for the rotation; however, life happens. The important thing is to communicate with the student and make every effort to get a bulk of the orientation completed in the first week.
What should I be sure to cover in the orientation?
Definitely policies and procedures of the clinic are at the top of the list. Review how feedback will be provided, how often, and preferred venue. Ideally short, daily meetings and weekly longer meetings work very well. Establish the expectations of the CI and student. If you have any pet peeves, be sure to share these as early as possible in your communications with the student.
What documentation should I be writing?
Keep a written record of incidents (positive and negative) throughout the rotation. Also, keep copies of the student’s weekly note that they send in to the clinical education office. This will be a tremendous resource when you sit down to write the midterm and final CPI.
Am I responsible for grading the student?
No. You will rate the student on their performance. The Director of Clinical Education (DCE) assigns the grade.
What if I see an issue brewing?...How soon do I place a call?
Informally, you are welcome to call the DCE at any point to get advice or talk strategy. Formally, it's important to talk to the student first. If the issue remains unresolved, then the CCCE should be notified. As a group, a decision is then made to get the DCE officially involved.
