20th Anniversary: Interdisciplinary by Design

20 in 20 award winners

20 years: From Idea to Expansion

The idea for a College of Allied Health Sciences arose from a task force that recognized that the University of Cincinnati had healthcare disciplines scattered across colleges. These programs were training students for healthcare fields, holding student practicum experiences or clinical rotations, and most had a licensure or credentialing component to their field.  The task force saw an opportunity to leverage resources and expertise as well as create an environment encouraging interdisciplinary research and education.

In 1998, the College of Allied Health Sciences was officially formed and became the University of Cincinnati’s youngest college. Communication sciences and disorders, dietetics, food and nutrition, physical therapy, and nuclear medical technology came together from across the university and relocated to French East to become the fourth Academic Health Center on the medical campus.

Since becoming a college, the number of undergraduate and graduate programs, both online and on-campus, has continued to grow to meet the needs of the current and future healthcare environment. In 2010, The School of Social Work joined CAHS as the college’s fifth department.  Most recently, the UC athletic training program transitioned into CAHS in 2016 expanding the Rehabilitation Sciences Department and leveraging extensive shared resources and expertise.  In 2019, this 20 year history of success will be commemorated with the College of Allied Health Sciences moving into the new University of Cincinnati Health Sciences Building.
