Sandra Combs, PhD, Lab
Sandra Combs completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Kentucky in 1988. She earned her Master’s Degree in Speech Language Pathology at the University of Cincinnati in 1990.
In 2009, Sandra earned her Ph.D. at the University of Cincinnati in Communication Sciences and Disorders with an emphasis in language, literacy, and sociology/psychology.
Clinical & Teaching Expertise
Dr. Combs has practiced clinically as a speech language pathologist for over 21 years. Her area of clinical focus has primarily been with preschool children and school-age children.
Dr. Combs has continued to supervise clinically at the University of Cincinnati in both preschool settings and on campus serving preschool and school-age children. Dr. Combs is also involved with the Language and Literacy Enrichment Group (LLEG) at the University. This clinical program serves preschool children with speech and language delays by offering a small group environment that encourages vocabulary, social skills, and general language/literacy development.
Dr. Combs teaches numerous courses at UC, including undergraduate courses in Phonetics, and Communication Disorders in Media and Literature. In addition to these courses, Dr. Combs teaches the School-Aged Language Courses to both distance learning and on-campus graduate students. She also has co-taught several doctoral seminars.
Dr. Combs’ research interests include collaborative trainings for teachers of children at-risk for later language and learning disabilities related to poverty or English Language Learning, vocabulary development for ELLs, reading comprehension strategies and collaborative models of intervention for school-age children and the effect of TBI on language and learning of school-age children.
She is involved with research in the area of dialogic book reading in the Language and Literacy Enrichment Group. This purpose of this research is to examine the best methods and tools to elicit language-rich interactions with at-risk preschool children.
Finally, she continues to be involved in the /r/ clinic at various levels both clinically and with research.
Dr. Combs has presented her research findings in regards to collaborative teacher training programs for language enrichment, RtI and reading comprehension strategies at the local, state, and national level.
