HEALTH SCIENCES,
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE
This degree has several areas of concentration including Sports and Biomechanics
and Exercise Science, and is well suited for individuals interested in the
growing field of allied health sciences. The degree prepares undergraduate
college students for graduate studies in the areas of physical therapy,
medicine, dentistry, nutrition, genetic counseling and other health related
master and doctorate degrees. The curriculum also provides students with
associate degrees, especially in the areas of allied health sciences, the
opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree in a related area
Career Opportunities
Sports and Biomechanics Concentration
The Sports and Biomechanics concentration is designed to
prepare undergraduate college students for graduate studies in the areas of
physical therapy, ergonomics, biomechanics, exercise physiology or athletic
training. While the background in kinesiology, sports and wellness may also
provide job opportunities in fitness or retail settings, graduates with this
degree are likely to continue with their education and enroll in physical
therapy, health administration, athletic training, nutrition, occupational
therapy or biomechanics programs. A master’s degree is the minimum degree for
many of these licensed allied health professions.
Exercise Science Concentration
The Exercise Science concentration will also prepare
undergraduate college students for graduate studies. The coursework in biology,
chemistry, physics, anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and exercise physiology
will provide a strong foundation for continuation in physical therapy, athletic
training, occupational therapy, nutrition, genetic counseling or exercise
physiology programs. Courses in this concentration will also provide the
prerequisites generally required for applying to medical, dental or veterinary
schools.
Upon completion of this degree:
Students who choose not to pursue an advanced degree have
career opportunities with their bachelor’s degree. Students meet the
eligibility requirements to sit for certification exams through the American
College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Strength and Conditioning
Association (NSCA). Through the ACSM, students are eligible for the ACSM
Certified Personal Trainer and ACSM Health/Fitness Instructor endorsements.
Through the NSCA, students are eligible for the Certified Strength and
Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) endorsement.
These certifications are entry level endorsements for
employment in the private health/fitness industry, health and/or rehabilitation
centers as exercise supervisors, high schools and universities. With additional
professional experience, these certifications can lead to advanced endorsements
through both the ACSM and the NSCA.
Admission Requirements
High School Students: High school graduates
interested in pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences must meet
admission requirements of the College of Allied Health Sciences. These
requirements include four units of college preparatory English, 3 units of
college-preparatory mathematics, 2 unites of science, 2 units of social science,
2 units of foreign language, 1 unit of fine arts, 2 units of any of the above.
Because of the need to include college coursework in the science and math areas,
successful completion of 2 years of high school algebra, one year of high school
geometry, one year of high school chemistry and one year of high school biology
is recommended. For students entering the Exercise Science concentration,
pre-calculus is recommended.
Admission by Transfer
Transfer students must meet the requirements of the College
of Allied Health Sciences.
HLSC Junior
Level Progression Form will need to be completed and submitted to the Health
Science Coordinator, Dr. Thomas Herrmann, by April 1, 2008 if you plan to start
your junior year in Fall 2008.
Curriculum
The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences offers students
the opportunity to pursue undergraduate coursework in the area of health science
with applications to biomechanics, sports, exercise, wellness, gerontology,
marketing, administration, industry, ergonomics and research. The integrated
science preparation also offers a strong background for individuals planning to
apply to related allied health and medical graduate programs.
Curriculum consists of three areas of requirements: major
