COMMUNICATION DISORDERS,
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE
The BACHELOR OF SCIENCE program in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD)
is located in the College of Allied Health Sciences, and is
devoted to establishing an understanding of normal growth and development of
human communication processes. CSD majors prepare for professions to help people
who have difficulty speaking and hearing due to a variety of causes. The
study of communication disorders involves understanding the development of
speech, language and hearing as well as learning how to diagnose and treat
communication disorders in adults and children. Class size at the undergraduate
level is approximately 20 students per class and there are seventeen professors
of speech-language pathology and audiology, making the student ratio 5 to 1. The
BS degree in CSD emphasizes a variety of options to acquaint students with
careers in which they may assist persons with communication disorders. Students
complete coursework in the areas of anatomy and neurophysiology, linguistic
aspects, acoustic aspects of communication, an introduction to speech, language
& hearing disorders, and an overview of the clinical process. Options in the
areas of business, education, health careers, and research & science are
available. A capstone project is also required. Undergraduate students may join
the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing
Association (NSSLHA) and receive professional publications. The department
has a CSD listserv for all undergraduate students. Information is posted
for special events within the college or department and student chats and news
within the profession. A departmental Honors Program is also open to any CSD
major with a 3.4 or better overall grade point average. Application and
requirements for the Honors Program may be obtained from Dr. Jo-Anne Prendeville
at (513) 558-8517.
Career Opportunities
A Bachelor of Science in communication disorders is a pre-professional degree
that prepares students for graduate work in either audiology or speech/language
pathology in addition to a variety of other graduate experiences in social
service, special education and health care. A Masters degree is necessary for
professional certification and licensure as a speech-language pathologist, and a
doctoral degree is required for an audiologist. Graduates find careers in
hospitals, speech and hearing clinics, schools, educational programs for
children with disabilities, the armed services, private practice and
governmental health agencies.
Program Requirements
Students can be admitted directly into the Communication Sciences & Disorders
program as first-time college freshmen. Students in the College of Allied
Health Sciences must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 to be considered in good
standing. It is advisable that students in the Communication Sciences &
Disorders program maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 to remain competitive for a
graduate program in either Speech Language Pathology or Audiology upon
completion of their 4-year degree.
