Why study Supervised Practice in Dietetics?

The Supervised Practice in Dietetics (SPD) Certificate Program is a secondary admittance program of the BS in Dietetics or Didactic Program in Dietetics at the University of Cincinnati which encompasses the last step to prepare you to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)

Following successful completion of the supervised practice, you may schedule and take the registered dietitian nutritionist exam to earn the RDN credential!

Admission Requirements

Supervised Practice in Dietetics certificate program applications are accepted only as positions are available. Admission to the SPD is reserved for UC Dietetics majors or those that hold a UC certificate from the Didactic Program in Dietetics only.

Prospective SPD students must have, or expect to have earned by the end of the current academic year:

  • a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • ·no less than a B- in the following nutrition courses:
    • Nutrition Care Planning
    • Medical Nutrition Therapy I
    • Medical Nutrition Therapy II 
  • a verification statement signed by UC’s DPD (Didactic Program in Dietetics) Director

SPD applications are accepted by November 15th each year. Students will be advised of the decision of the Admissions Committee prior to the start of the spring semester. 

Attributes that contribute to success in this major include strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent math comprehension and critical thinking skills, ability to interact well with a diverse population, enjoy helping people, and commitment to lifelong learning. 

Dietetics professionals work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, schools, supermarkets, private practice settings, eating disorder centers, with athletes, academia, research, health departments, business corporations, health clubs, and many other areas.

An individual who wishes to become a:

Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) must complete the didactic coursework in dietetics (Bachelor of Science in Dietetics), an accredited post-baccalaureate dietetic internship, and pass the Commission on Dietetic Registration credentialing exam for RDNs.  This credential enables the RD to perform nutrition risk assessments and prescribe medical nutrition therapy to remediate or prevent disease.

Nutrition and Dietetics Technician, Registered (NDTR) must complete the Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and then they can take the Commission on Dietetic Registration credentialing exam for NDTRs. This credential enables a NDTR to work in partnership with the RDN to screen, evaluate and educate patients on topics related to nutrition. 

Certified Dietary Manager, Certified Food Protection Professional (CDM) can take the Certifying Board for Dietary Managers credentialing exam after completing the Bachelor of Science in Dietetics.  This credential recognizes experts in managing dietary operations.

All undergraduate students must successfully complete all Dietetics coursework plus 1200 hours of supervised practice to graduate.

Application Deadlines

CPD applications are accepted by Novewmber 15th each year. A complete application includes:

  • Application form with signature;
  • Official copy of transcripts; and
  • Three (3) signed recommendation forms.

Completed applications may be dropped off in the main office of the Department of Rehabilitation, Exercise, and Nutrition Sciences (French East, suite 364) or mailed to:
