Meet Christopher Shaw
About Christopher
Christopher is originally from Louisville, KY, and he attended the University of Louisville earning a B.A. in Communication and an M. Ed in College Student Personnel. He has worked in higher education for over a decade in various capacities including admissions, transfer student advising and academic advising. He has worked at UC and with the College of Allied Health Sciences for almost 5 years. His educational background has prepared him to guide students through many of the developmental and growth opportunities that happen in college. His experience has built a soldi but flexible foundation to adjust to the ever-changing higher education landscape and the wide range of challenges that college students face.
Christopher's Advising Philosophy
Academic advising involves both an educational and growth process guided by research and student development theory. In addition to degree and graduation requirements, advising guides students through relevant co-curricular opportunities that provide the appropriate blend of challenge and support. The advisor provides a safe place for students to work on identity development through decision-making skills, self-evaluation, practicing self-advocacy, and problem-solving strategies. As students move from autonomy to interdependence, they become more resilient and take ownership of their education and career goals.
Get to know Christopher
What’s your favorite season and why?
He enjoys spring the most. He looks forward to that first warm day after several months of cold and winter weather. It is warm enough in the afternoon to walk around the neighborhood or eat outside, but not so warm yet, that you are uncomfortable. Growing up in Louisville, spring also meant the start of Kentucky Derby festival events.
What’s something you know more about than the average person that isn’t related to your career?
He knows more about the Walt Disney Company than most other people want or need to know. It started when his grandmother gave him the book “The Art of Walt Disney” for a Christmas gift. Since then, he has been fascinated with the century long path of the company form cartoons and movies all the way through theme parks and virtual/augmented reality. Because the company has been involved in so many areas of nostalgic entertainment, there always seems to be more to learn.
Are you a morning person or night owl?
He is more of a morning person than a night owl. He doesn’t necessarily look forward to getting up early or more cheerful in the morning, but he is the most productive in the morning. The older you get the harder and harder it is to be a successful night owl.
