SeeWords Anywhere
This purpose of this study is designed to learn more about a new tool called SeeWords Anywhere, a reading tool that uses picture-in-text to help a reader in sounding out words and improving their accuracy. We also want to learn about the students’ opinions of the SeeWords Anywhere reading tool.
You will first read some words and passages to determine your reading level. This will take about 20-40 minutes. For the following sessions, you will be randomly assigned to one of two groups that use either a) the SeeWords Anywhere reading tool or b) decoding strategies provided by the clinician. Each of these sessions will take 10-20 minutes. You will participate in no more than one session per day, for 20 sessions. You will also be asked to complete a questionnaire regarding your opinion of the SeeWords Anywhere reading tool or the teacher-supported strategies.
Who
This reading study is for students in grades 4th-12th who are reading below grade level in the area of decoding and/or fluency.
When
This study will involve one 20–40 minute evaluation session to determine the student’s current reading level. Then, the student will participate in 20 intervention sessions, which will involve reading passages on a computer. Eighteen sessions will involve using the SeeWords Anywhere tool. Each intervention session will take about 10-20 minutes. The student will participate in three sessions per week for approximately seven weeks
Where
Sessions can take place in person at your school, at the University of Cincinnati, or via virtual/online meeting.
Benefit/Risk
There are no perceived risks. You will receive a $50 gift card at the end of your participation in this study.
