Women's Health Equity Symposium 2024

Conference Summary

The proposed project aims to address persistent gender and sex disparities in health care and health outcomes in the United States. This two-day symposium will foster interdisciplinary collaboration among women's health researchers, clinicians, and community members. The symposium will center the voices of historically marginalized women, integrating biomedical research with sociological frameworks to address systemic oppression in health care. Sessions will focus on understanding barriers to research and treatment, promoting innovative strategies, and forming action teams to advance health equity post-symposium.

Objectives

  • Facilitate dialogue and collaboration among leaders in women's health.
  • Amplify the voices of women at the intersections of race, class, sexuality, and health.
  • Develop a new framework for power-sharing in health care research.

Expected Outcomes

  • Accelerate research on women's health disparities.
  • Shift biomedical research and clinical practices to better address women's needs.
  • Cultivate social and political power among women.
  • Identify policies, research projects, and programs for implementation to create actionable change and improve health outcomes for women.

Keynote speaker: Dr. Meredith Shockley-Smith

Executive Director, Cradle Cincinnati and Founder, Queens Village

Dr. Meredith Shockley-Smith, Executive Director of Cradle Cincinnati and Assistant Field Professor at the University of Cincinnati Medical School is the founding director of Queens Village and a former professor of Black Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies. 

Dr. Meredith Shockley-Smith applies her passion for Black Studies and Women & Gender Studies beyond the classroom in efforts to build stronger, more equitable relationships to benefit the greater community. Meredith received her Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati in Educational Studies and was formerly the Director of Women’s and Black Studies at Northern Kentucky University. As Executive Director of Cradle Cincinnati, she seeks to bring together partners, community, and medical professionals to co-create sustainable solutions that increase equity, lift Black women’s leadership, and lower infant mortality and disparities across Cincinnati. 

Dr. Smith's dedication to service goes beyond her professional roles. She served as the honorary chair of the 2023 Dress for Success Fashion Show and is a valued member of several boards, including the National Board of Directors for Public Allies and Greenlight Fund.
