Admission Requirements
MS in Nutrition Sciences
Applicants interested in the Master of Science in Nutrition Sciences program must meet the following admissions requirements:
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
- A cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 at the undergraduate level based on a 4.0 scale
- Prerequisite coursework as listed below
- GRE scores
- Three current letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your academic and professional ability.
Prerequisite Coursework
The applicant is required to successfully complete the following or equivalent master’s prerequisite courses:
- An introductory nutrition course (UC equivalent NUTR 1030 Personal Nutrition)
- A year of general chemistry with lab (UC equivalent CHEM 1030 and CHEM 1031 GOBCHEM I and II; CHEM 1030L and CHEM 1031L GOBCHEM I and II Lab)
It is also preferred that the applicant take the following courses before admissions to the Master of Science program, however these courses can be taken after enrollment:
- A year of biochemistry (or at least one semester of biochemistry with one semester of organic chemistry or genetics; UC equivalent for biochemistry CHEM 2030 and CHEM 2031 Survey of biochemistry I and II, no lab required)
- A year of anatomy and physiology (UC equivalent BIOL 2001C & BIOL 2002C Anatomy & Physiology I & II)
International Student Requirements
- International students need to submit a transcript evaluation with a GPA conversion to a 4.0 scale. Any credit evaluators that are members of National Association of Credit Evaluators (https://www.naces.org/members) can be used. SpanTran https://spantran.com/web/ is one of the lowest cost options. Applications without a transcript evaluation will not be considered for admission.
- International students must demonstrate English proficiency. Most students fulfill the English requirement by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Testing System (IELTS), or the PEARSON Test of English (PTE). For IELTS, an overall band score of 6.5 is sufficient for graduate admission. For PEARSON, a score of 54 is sufficient. TOEFL requirements vary based on the type of TOEFL test taken, and scores are valid for up to two years. The minimum university requirement is:
- 520 (paper-based test), or
- 190 (computer-based test), or
- 80 (internet-based test)
