Admission Requirements

Applicants interested in the Graduate Certificate in School Social Worker program must meet the following admissions requirements:

  • The School Social Worker program is only open to students currently enrolled in the MSW Program within the children and families concentration. If you are interested in this program, first apply to the MSW Program. If applicants already have a MSW and work within a school setting, they may apply to complete any additional requirements to be eligible for the ODE Pupil Service Credential (aka School Social Work license).

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university

  • A cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 at the undergraduate level based on a 4.0 scale.

  • Resume/CV

  • Statement of Purpose: Describe your knowledge and interest in receiving your Ohio Pupil Services License (150 words or less) 

  • At least one letter  

  • English proficiency is required of all applicants whose native language is not English. For more information on UC's English proficiency requirements please visit the UC English Proficiency Requirements

Applications for the Graduate Certificate in School Social Worker are due:

  • August 15 for fall semester admission 
  • February 15 for summer semester admission

The graduate application may be found on the UC Graduate School website.

  • Click on “Apply to UC” and create an account to start a new application.

  • Under the program tab search for School Social Worker, Post-Baccalaureate Certificate.

  • You will have the option to post a video essay, recommendations, and GRE test scores however these are not required for your application.

  • Application fees may be paid by credit card (Visa, Discover, Master Card) or electronic check. This method is preferred and will speed processing of your application. Applications will not be processed until payment is received. 

  • Upload your unofficial transcript. An official transcript will only need to be submitted after you have been accepted and confirmed as a student.

Dr. Shauna Acquavita is a Professor and Director at the School of Social Work at the University of Cincinnati. She has a decade of social work experience working with individuals who have been diagnosed with mental health and substance use disorders. She completed a Pre-Doctorate Fellowship in Maternal and Child Health at the University of Maryland, Baltimore and a Post-Doctorate at Johns Hopkins University in the Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit. Her research focuses on substance use disorders including tobacco use among vulnerable populations, specifically pregnant women. She has been the recipient of federal, state and local grants focusing on behavioral health workforce development. She is a proponent of interprofessional education and collaboration.
