Share one key lesson you've learned from your work with Advanced Bionics that you wish you had known as a student.

The best lesson that I’ve learned since taking my current role is that you can always learn more and will need to. I used to think that after graduating with a doctorate I had learned everything I would need to, to be a successful audiologist. Thankfully, I quickly learned that while the education I received from UC was incredible, I will need to be a lifelong learner to be successful at anything. Advanced Bionics taught me that there are vastly different ways to practice audiology and there is always more to learn.

What inspired you to pursue a career in your current field?

The ASL department at UC led me to where I am today. An ASL professor of mine told me that I would make a great audiologist, and, at the time, I didn’t even know what audiology was. Since then, knowing ASL has been incredibly helpful as an audiologist because we work with the d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing population every day and some of those patients communicate most effectively through ASL.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your career?

The most rewarding aspect of my career is being able to be a part of another person’s story in a positive way. I get to help those that are deaf or hard-of-hearing that are really struggling in their daily life regain their agency, social life, and overall communication goals.

What was your first job after graduating, and how did it shape your professional development?

I’ll talk about my 4th year or audiology residency here. I worked at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, MI. Moving to TC shaped my professional development by allowing me space and guidance to become a fully independent audiologist. The team at Munson mentored me and shaped me into the audiologist I am today and I am forever grateful for their guidance. By the end of my training, I felt like a confident and successful audiologist and was ready to take on the world!
