What do you enjoy doing outside of class, schoolwork, and clinical?

Outside of school and clinical, I work part-time as a lab assistant and phlebotomist. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my friends and reading books. I also love to travel whenever I am able.

Are you involved in any student organizations? What has your experience been in those organizations?

I am a part of the MLS student club known as LabCats and have participated in Team Mexico- an interdisciplinary group that travels to Mexico to provide lab, audiology, and physical therapy work for Mexican residents. In these student organizations, I met many like-minded people individuals and made incredible memories.

When did you know you wanted to work in this field?

I knew that I wanted to work in this field in high school. After taking biology, I fell in love with science and knew that I wanted to work in a field where I would be making a positive impact on others. This lead me to the medical field, but I was unsure that I wanted to be a nurse. Since I enjoyed working with microscopes and in labs, I did some research that pointed me to medical laboratory science. Laboratory testing is an extremely important part of the medical field that gets easily overlooked. Clinical lab scientists are responsible for providing test results that contribute to 70% of medical diagnoses.

What types of hands-on experiences have you been able to gain in the program?

How have the opportunities at UC helped to shape your career goals or view of the profession?

The opportunities and experiences that I have had at UC have allowed me to see the importance of providing accurate and precise testing. I have become a better student and person because of this program.

Anything else you would say to a prospective student that is trying to find the right program for them?

My advice to students who are trying to find a program that is right for them is to recognize not only what you are passionate about, but also topics you enjoy. From here, take time to look for programs that can help you pursue these passions. Reach out to students or professors that are a part of this program. Shadow a professional who earned the degree that you are considering. Taking some or all of these steps will help you find the program right for you. Best of luck! Believe in yourself and know that you can do it!
